Lost..?

Today one of my classmates likened our class to the group in the TV show "Lost"..we have all been flung together, from completely different places and have to get on with each other. I also have been seeing the experience akin to a live reality TV show- throw together 101 people and see what develops.

Today's "Leading Organisations" class was really interesting: we broke off into our Learning Groups of 9 people and talked about our group- how we, the 9 of us, interact together. This is of course notoriously difficult to do honestly. We did dig down and then the discussion moved on to our issues with the entire cohort. The cohort is often referred to as "they" but of course it is just made up of us, many Learning Groups. It's funny how as numbers swell, "The Cohort" becomes more faceless and each of us less responsible for the collective outcomes.

People spoke about how they had initially had high hopes that the cohort would support their learning and personal change better than is in fact happening. I think many people are self-focused- perhaps they are struggling with keeping up with the program or they are self-engrossed with their own self-development.However at the same time, some good friendships have also sprung.

Many people talked about how the quieter members of the class are not given enough airtime in which to speak and it's the louder people who dominate the Learning Groups and their voices are always heard.

I think both of these points are so reflective of society in general.

I am also learning how to listen better. or so i hope. Listening definitely is underrated - it gives you a lot of insight and power as you understand people and situations so much better. We have a class on Effective Listening next week.

Things are developing..many of us are all realising half the program is already gone and we need to get to know each other better as time is running out!
